Kdun – A runway overrun incident at Southwest Oregon Regional Airport has sparked federal investigation after a HondaJet failed to stop upon landing and ended up in Coos Bay. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has released its preliminary findings following the April 7 accident, which occurred early in the morning in North Bend, Oregon.
The small jet was carrying five people when the incident took place. All passengers sustained injuries, though none were life-threatening. According to the NTSB, the aircraft landed normally but was unable to come to a complete stop before the end of the runway. It then overran the paved surface, coming to rest in the shallow waters of the nearby bay.
This runway overrun has raised serious concerns among aviation safety officials, especially due to the absence of extreme weather or mechanical failure being initially reported.

In its preliminary report, the NTSB noted that the aircraft’s descent and touchdown appeared routine. However, for reasons still under investigation, the jet did not decelerate sufficiently. The plane exited the runway at speed, crossed the overrun area, and submerged partially into Coos Bay.
Investigators have since recovered flight data and cockpit voice recordings. These are now being analyzed to determine the sequence of events and whether pilot response, aircraft systems, or runway conditions played a role. The NTSB is working closely with Honda Aircraft Company and airport authorities to gather all relevant information.
The incident temporarily shut down operations at the airport while emergency crews responded. Their prompt actions ensured all passengers were rescued quickly and received medical attention.
This runway overrun is part of a broader pattern of concern among aviation experts. Smaller regional airports like Southwest Oregon often have limited runway overrun protection areas. As a result, even minor miscalculations or system failures can lead to dangerous outcomes.
The NTSB emphasized that this is an ongoing investigation and further updates will be provided as more data is analyzed. Meanwhile, the aviation community is watching closely, with many calling for enhanced safety infrastructure at regional airports nationwide.
The incident is a sobering reminder of the importance of runway safety and the risks that can arise even during seemingly routine landings.
