Kdun – Oregon taxpayers who requested a tax extension are now being urged to file their 2024 returns as soon as possible. According to a recent announcement from the Oregon Department of Revenue, the extension only postponed the filing deadline not the payment. Oregon taxpayers should not wait until the final due date, as early filing can help avoid penalties, interest charges, and last-minute complications.
Even those who filed for an extension last month are advised to move quickly. Filing early not only reduces stress but can also speed up any refund process and resolve issues before they escalate.
For Oregon taxpayers, filing after the extension deadline without submitting payment can result in financial consequences. The Department highlights that extensions do not delay payment obligations meaning any owed taxes were still due by the original deadline. Late payments may lead to added interest or penalties, which can become costly over time.

In addition, early filers have more time to review their documents, catch potential mistakes, and respond to any unexpected issues. This proactive approach is especially helpful for those with complex returns or changes in income or deductions during the year.
The Oregon Department of Revenue provides various tools to make the filing process easier. Oregon taxpayers can file electronically through approved software or directly through the state’s website. E-filing is often faster, more accurate, and more secure. Paper filing is still accepted, but taxpayers should allow extra time for processing.
The Department also encourages those who feel unsure or overwhelmed to seek help from certified tax professionals. Preparing ahead and filing early ensures a smoother experience and helps Oregon taxpayers stay in control of their finances.
Oregon taxpayers should not treat extensions as a reason to delay. The sooner returns are filed, the better the outcome both financially and logistically.
