Kdun – A Health Alert has been issued by the Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) and the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA), urging pet owners to exercise caution when feeding raw pet food to their animals. This warning comes after two cats in Multnomah County tested positive for Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), a serious and potentially deadly virus. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of raw pet food and its potential risks to both animals and humans.
The Health Alert highlights a growing concern: raw pet food, particularly those containing raw meat, eggs, or poultry, may carry harmful pathogens like HPAI. In the recent case, the infected cats were found to have consumed raw pet food, which is believed to be the source of their exposure. HPAI, commonly known as bird flu, can spread from animals to humans, posing a significant public health risk. Authorities are now investigating whether contaminated raw pet food is contributing to the spread of this virus.

The Health Alert emphasizes that the dangers of raw pet food extend beyond pets. While animals can suffer severe illness or even death from infections like HPAI, humans who handle contaminated food or come into contact with infected pets are also at risk. Symptoms in humans can range from mild respiratory issues to severe complications, depending on the strain of the virus. Pet owners should handle raw pet food with extreme care and ensure proper hygiene and sanitation to minimize exposure.
In light of this Health Alert, experts urge pet owners to switch to commercially processed pet food. Which manufacturers thoroughly cook to eliminate harmful pathogens. If pet owners still prefer raw pet food, they must ensure. It comes from reputable sources and follow strict handling guidelines, such as thoroughly washing hands and surfaces after preparation. Additionally, monitoring pets for signs of illness such as lethargy, respiratory distress, or loss of appetite is crucial. Early detection and veterinary care can prevent the spread of infections and protect both pets and their families.
This Health Alert serves as a timely reminder of the potential dangers associated with raw pet food. By taking proactive measures, pet owners can safeguard their beloved animals and themselves from preventable health risks. Stay informed, stay cautious, and prioritize safety when it comes to your pet’s diet.
