Kdun – Southwestern and Rotary have joined forces once again to bring the “Gift of Literacy” program to life in Coos Bay, Oregon. This impactful initiative aims to foster a love for reading among second-grade students by giving each child a brand-new book of their own. Southwestern and Rotary launched the program with the belief. That early access to books can shape a child’s future and encourage a lifelong habit of learning.
Kicked off the literacy celebration at the Southwestern Oregon Community College campus. Where students from local elementary schools gathered for a day filled with storytelling, book exploration, and fun literacy-themed activities. The highlight of the event was when each child selected a book to take home. A simple act that can spark imagination and growth.
Inspired by the words of Dr. Seuss “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you’ll go.” The program reflects a shared vision between Southwestern and Rotary: to open doors for young learners. And build stronger communities through education.

Understand that encouraging reading skills early on can improve academic performance and boost children’s confidence. By combining education and community spirit. They continue to plant the seeds of literacy that will help students grow into informed, inspired individuals.
As the program grows, Southwestern and Rotary remain committed to reaching more students and strengthening the future of literacy, one book at a time.
