Kdun – City Improvement Ideas have always been at the forefront of my mind as a lifelong resident of Roseburg and a small business owner. Having served as a former Roseburg City Councilor for Ward Four, which includes Downtown, the Riverfront, and two Historic Districts. I have been fortunate enough to see firsthand the potential and challenges our community faces. Throughout my tenure, I helped organize a decade-long riverfront cleanup and restoration project. Which was funded in part by generous donations such as the $50,000 contribution from Umpqua Bank to build the Micelli Playground. The experience of working alongside volunteers and seeing our city evolve has made me passionate about continuing to contribute to its growth and development.
One of the areas that I believe Roseburg can significantly improve lies in the underutilized public land that is already in the city’s possession. The city owns a ten-acre plot of flat land adjacent to Lowe’s, which has public utilities ready to support development. The city has already identified a potential future use for this land, with ideas of turning it into a park. However, I urge the City Council to consider prioritizing this land for public use. Ensuring that it serves as a community resource before moving forward with any other projects that might impinge on the natural environment of our riparian areas.
By focusing on utilizing existing properties. We can avoid unnecessary environmental impacts and reduce the burden on local businesses and citizens. There is ample opportunity to enhance this land with public parks, recreational spaces, or even community gardens that encourage healthy, sustainable living. Let’s put the city’s already-paid-for land to work rather than encroaching on more precious green spaces or other public resources.

Homelessness is an issue that has become more visible in many cities, including Roseburg. As a community, we must work together to find thoughtful, compassionate solutions that balance the needs of both our homeless population and the safety and well-being of all residents. One suggestion is to turn off the electricity at the park pavilions, or alternatively. Install coin-operated meters to manage electricity use. This small adjustment could help alleviate some strain on local resources.
In addition, ensuring safe access to public spaces is crucial. I propose the installation of lighting along the bike path. Which would allow pedestrians and cyclists to safely traverse the city. Particularly during evening hours.
Furthermore, one practical and impactful way to deal with some of the consequences of homelessness is by directing a community resource officer to lead a community service group. This group could provide a valuable exchange of time for fines. Encouraging individuals to take part in environmental cleanups or riparian restoration projects. This would not only contribute to the improvement of our natural spaces but also provide a sense of purpose for those involved in community service.
Finally, I believe that city government needs to be more inclusive of all community members. I suggest adding two additional members to the city council to represent citizens who own property or a business within city limits, even if they reside outside of the city proper. This would help ensure that the voices of those who contribute economically to Roseburg are heard in decision-making processes.
Additionally, I propose stricter enforcement of Oregon’s Leash Law, particularly on public property. By ensuring all animals are leashed and under control when on city land. We can reduce safety concerns and maintain a more orderly, respectful environment for everyone.
Roseburg has many opportunities to build on its strengths and improve the quality of life for its residents. By utilizing existing land, addressing homelessness thoughtfully. Ensuring safer spaces for pedestrians, and expanding representation in city governance. We can work together to create a better future for our community. I want to express my gratitude to those who are already contributing to these efforts and encourage all residents to continue working toward making Roseburg an even better place to live.
