Kdun – The Blessing of the Fleet returns to Bandon this May, bringing back a cherished community tradition after a four-year pause. The community first held this meaningful event in 1989 to honor local fishermen, bless the vessels heading out to sea, and remember those lost to the ocean. Organizers have scheduled this year’s ceremony for Monday, May 26 at 9:30 a.m. at the Riverwalk Amphitheater, near the glass-enclosed shelter known for its peaceful view of the Coquille River
The Blessing of the Fleet is a solemn yet uplifting ceremony deeply rooted in maritime culture. It offers prayers for safety and calm waters, especially for those whose lives and livelihoods depend on the ocean. In Bandon, it also serves as a memorial for fishermen who never returned home. Local clergy will lead the blessing, and participants will read the names of the departed before tossing ceremonial wreaths into the water.
Many community members consider the event a vital part of Bandon’s identity. Organizers put the ceremony on hold in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Making this year’s return especially significant for families and friends of those honored in the past.

Beyond tradition, the Blessing of the Fleet brings people together. Local residents, school groups, veterans, and visitors are expected to attend this year’s ceremony. Organizers encourage attendees to participate by bringing flowers, wearing nautical or blue-themed clothing, and joining in the moment of remembrance.
The Riverwalk Amphitheater, with its open space and riverfront view, provides an ideal setting for quiet reflection and shared memories. The return of the event also symbolizes the strength and unity of the Bandon community.
As the sounds of the river mix with prayers and the echo of names remembered. The Blessing of the Fleet once again reaffirms Bandon’s enduring bond with the sea and with each other.
