Kdun – The Coos Bay Fire Department recently conducted an essential ‘Burn to Learn’ exercise. Offering firefighters the most realistic training experience possible. This live-fire training session, held at 296 North Empire Boulevard, provided an invaluable opportunity for crews to enhance their skills in fire suppression, search and rescue, and emergency response.
The training involved setting a controlled fire in an old structure. Allowing firefighters to experience real-life conditions such as extreme heat, thick smoke, and rapidly changing fire behavior. These conditions simulate the challenges they might face in an actual emergency. Helping them build confidence and improve their response techniques.
This hands-on approach ensures that Coos Bay Fire personnel are not only technically prepared but also mentally conditioned to handle high-stress situations effectively.

The Coos Bay Fire training session consisted of multiple drills that replicated different fire scenarios. Firefighters practiced extinguishing flames with various suppression techniques. Navigating through smoke-filled rooms to locate potential victims, and ventilating structures to improve visibility and air quality.
Additionally, teams worked on effective communication and coordination, both of which are crucial in real-life fire emergencies. Each drill was designed to test firefighters’ problem-solving abilities, quick decision-making skills, and overall adaptability in unpredictable environments.
“Live fire training is an invaluable experience for our team,” said a Coos Bay Fire official. “It allows us to apply our skills in a controlled setting, ensuring we are fully prepared for actual emergencies. The more we train in realistic scenarios, the better we can protect our community when real fires occur.”
The Burn to Learn program is not just about firefighter training. It also plays a significant role in enhancing public safety. Well-trained firefighters can respond more efficiently to fires, minimizing property damage, reducing injury risks, and potentially saving more lives.
The Coos Bay Fire Department conducts these live training exercises whenever a suitable structure is available. Ensuring that its teams remain well-prepared for emergency situations. The department follows strict environmental and safety regulations to ensure that the controlled burns do not pose a hazard to the surrounding community.
By continually refining their skills through realistic training like Burn to Learn. The Coos Bay Fire Department strengthens its emergency response capabilities. These efforts actively prepare firefighters and the residents they protect for potential fire emergencies. Ultimately making the community a safer place for everyone.
